Overview

Problem

The mental health app sector is rapidly growing, fueled by increasing mental health awareness and the accessibility of technology. Companies aim to incorporate apps into their wellness programs, recognizing that prioritizing employees' mental well-being directly correlates with boosting productivity. Currently, there are no available apps or websites designed for companies to help them achieve this goal.

Solution

We have created a user-friendly mental health website for companies, where their employees can track their mood, stress, and activity levels. Users can also receive helpful suggestions to manage stress and support their mental well-being.

Competitive Analysis

The Mental health app sector is growing fast due to growth factors such as rising mental health awareness, increasing prevalence of poor mental health, and the convenience and accessibility offered by technology. Self-help apps, which offer features like mood tracking, meditation, and stress management, are the majority due to their accessibility and appeal to a broad user base.
They are also being integrated into corporate wellness programs as employers recognize the importance of supporting employees' mental well-being to improve productivity (and reduce healthcare costs)
The market is has intense competition, with startups, established healthcare providers, and tech companies all creating their own versions. Key players include Headspace, Daylio, and Moodgym

Headspace

Pros

  • Widely recognized and reputable in the mindfulness and meditation space

  • wide range of high-quality, research-backed meditation and mindfulness content, appealing to users seeking professional guidance.

  • Known for its user-friendly interface and engaging design, which can enhance user retention and satisfaction.

  • Provides also sleep aids, workouts, and focus music, catering to a broad range of wellness needs.

Cons

  • Membership can be relatively expensive compared to some other apps, which might deter users looking for free or low-cost solutions.

  • The vast number of choices can overwhelm new users unsure where to start.

  • Lack of insights for the long term

Daylio

Pros

  • Allows users to track their mood and activities without the need for typing, using a simple and intuitive interface

  • No need for personal data to start

  • Users can customize mood options and activities, making the app highly personal and relevant to individual needs.

  • Offers a robust free version, making it accessible to a wider audience.

Cons

  • Lack of guided content

  • Relies on user input to track moods and activities, which may be challenging for those lacking motivation

Moodgym

Pros

  • Offers cognitive behavioral therapy techniques, providing research-backed ways for improving mental health.

  • Teaches users about cognitive distortions and how to manage them

  • Cost-Effective

Cons

  • Strategies may be too complex and structured

  • Outdated interface

  • More informative and less engaging and interactive

  • Limited focus and less variety in techniques than other apps

Insights

  • All of them featured different levels of tracking features and health support content (tips and programs for improving mental wellness)

  • Some seemed more personalized to the user than the others

  • There needs to be a way to motivate the user (reminder, etc)

  • All of them were mobile apps, and we found there was a gap in the market for web apps and none of them were targeted at the corporate level for companies to focus on their wellness programs

Surveys

The market research and competitive analysis informed the metrics and questions we wanted to ask in our survey, that included questions about employment status, their mental health, their affinity for using an app like this and what features would be helpful.

  • Based on a qualitative survey filled by 20 respondents and 5 interviews, these were notable results

    • 92% of users indicated they were employed and had poor mental health

    • 78% of users indicated that they are likely to use a mental health app for tracking their mood and personal strategies

    • 85% of users had a preference for mood tracking functionality in a mental health app

    • 72% of users indicated that they would find personalized tips and coping strategies helpful

    • 60% of users indicated that other health metrics would also be helpful to see in conjunction (sleep & physical activity)

Creating Personas

From the research and surveys, here are the two personas, one of an employee that would be using the site and the second, an employer/admin that would being charge of the employees in the wellness program to use the site.

User Stories

In researching the ideal user and creating personas, I narrowed it down to these key user stories to target within the scope and time period for the MVP

  • As a user, I want to be able to input my metrics to this platform to keep track of my progress

  • As a user, I want to be able to look up my past metrics to track my progress

  • As an administrator, I want to delete employees from this platform as they leave the company so my current users are up to date

  • As an administrator, I would like to be able to add new employees when they are hired so they can use the platform.

  • As a user, I would like coping strategies to deal with stress to be given to me based on my metrics and my stress levels so I can use the best strategies for my situation.

  • As a user I would like to be reminded to track my progress so that I can have a comprehensive view of my health

User Journey

User Flow

The main user flow we ended up with a user that logs in/signs up, immediately logs their daily tracking info, views their stats, and if they are an admin, they are able to access that dashboard. From the admin level, they can add or delete users.

Branding/Visual Design

The logo features a face with a heart and mind all connected, embodies the integration of emotions and thoughts essential for mental well-being. Overall, it conveys a holistic approach to mental health, emphasizing support, understanding, and acceptance within a safe and inviting environment.
This color palette was chosen because pink is linked with feelings of calmness, nurturing, and compassion and beige is favored for its calming and neutral properties. In combination, they bring our website a calming atmosphere for a user to support their own mental health.

High Fidelity Prototype

We then implemented our visual styling into our wireframes and refined them until we could create a high fidelity design and prototype to send to our engineers. See the design prototype here

Final Product

Once the mockups were finalized, I handed them off to the development team to make the site, along with visual specifications such as color, font, and font size, as well as all the static graphics we wanted to use

  • We had to account for the limited time and accept that some features would be hard to implement and had to adjust our designs accordingly to make the site functional as well as visual

    • ex. we had to make our questionnaire for a new user and a existing user the same so it was easier for the engineers to implement quickly

Final Thoughts

This was my first time designing with a team that would actually implement my designs into a site so it was a valuable experience iterating and getting feedback from developers in order to create a product.

Lessons Learned

  • Working on a team really encouraged me to consider scope and time limits when it came to design and features to include from the research. There were a lot of different things that could have been added to the app, but time constraints would not have allowed the developers to finish an MVP within the week provided

  • I was able to get experience designing under pressure, collaborating closely with others, and putting the user's needs at the heart of the design process. It's a great way to learn, innovate, and see how much can be achieved in a short time when working as part of a dedicated team.

Future Iteration Ideas:

  • adding more insights on the admin end

    • a general look into the overall stress levels of the employees
